Formulation of Hypothesis

A hypothesis is defined as “a tentative proposition” suggested as a solution to a problem or as an explanation of some phenomenon.

Formulation of Hypothesis

The formulation of the hypothesis is typically determined with the help of implications of the related literature and deductive logic of the problem under the investigation.

Types of Hypotheses

  1. Alternative Hypothesis

  2. Null Hypothesis

  3. Complex Hypothesis

  4. Simple Hypothesis

  5. Statistical Hypothesis

  6. Empirical Hypothesis

Need and Importance of Hypothesis

  • Hypothesis enables the researcher to objectively investigate new areas of discovery. Thus it provides a powerful tool for the advancement of knowledge.

  • Hypothesis provides objectivity to the research activities.

  • It also provides directions to conduct research such as defining the sources and relevance of data.

  • Hypothesis provides clear and specific goals to the researchers. Hypothesis provides link between theories actual practical research

  • It provides a bridge between theory and reality

  • A hypothesis suggests which type of research is likely to be most appropriate.

  • As it is a tentative statement of anticipated results, it guides the researchers towards the direction in which the researchers should proceed.

  • It stimulates the thinking process of researcher as the researcher forms the hypothesis by anticipating the outcome.

  • It also determines the most appropriate research designs and techniques of data analysis.

  • It serves as a framework for drawing conclusions of a research study.

  • Without hypothesis research would be like aimless wandering.

Characteristics of Hypothesis

  • It should be simple, clear and precise form.

  • It should be based on research question, problem, objectives and concepts.

  • It should be capable of quantifying, measuring and testing.

  • It should be narrow and specific

  • It is a tentative proposition. It should be useful and guiding tool in further stage of research.

  • It should provide logical link between theory and tests performed to check the assumption made.

Sources of Hypothesis

  • Similarity between phenomena.

  •  Observations in day to day practices.

  •  Observations in past studies.

  •  Findings of research and development department.

  •  Experience or observations of the competitors.

  •  Suggestions from functional executives.

  •  Suggestion from shop floor.

Functions Of Hypothesis

  • Hypothesis can provide direction to the research. A hypothesis contains several concepts which are logically connected or arranged. The interrelationships among the concepts give a clear answer to the problem under study.

  • Hypothesis helps us to provide the direction to the research. A researcher can decide what data are to be collected for the study on the basis of this study.

  • Hypothesis can place clear and specific goals before the researcher.

  • Hypothesis prevents us from blind search. Hypothesis helps us to search only for relevant facts. So it is helping us to save money and time.

  • Hypothesis acts as a guide to collect the relevant data related to the problem.

Table 1

This table shows the merits and demerits of hypothesis.

Sl No

MERITS

DEMERITS

Easier to understand

Less sensitive

2

The computation is easier

used when data is small.

Less efficient
